As Californians face a crushing tax burden and Democrats plan the demise of Proposition 13, state's leading taxpayer group weighs in
LOS ANGELES - As Californians struggle against some of the nation's most crushing taxes, the state's influential Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association's campaign arm is backing former California Republican Party Chairman Ron Nehring for Lt. Governor.
"Ron Nehring's record standing up for taxpayers is rock solid. He has opposed every tax increase dreamed up by politicians in Sacramento and he is a strong defender of Prop 13. We urge all California taxpayers to join us in supporting Ron Nehring for Lt Governor," said Executive Director Kris Vosburgh.
The Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association is the state's leading taxpayer organization, working to protect Proposition 13, taxpayers' rights, including the right to limited taxation, the right to vote on tax increases and promoting sound use of taxpayer dollars.
"Californians are being crushed under the weight of an enormous tax burden," said Nehring. "I'm proud to have the support of California's leading taxpayer advocates as we work toward the goal of making taxes lower and simpler."
CALIFORNIA'S MISERABLE AND UNCOMPETITIVE TAX BURDEN
Californians are paying the highest combined sales and local tax burden in the West, and the fourth highest in the nation, according to the respected Tax Foundation. "You can get in your car in LA, drive northeast, and not hit a higher tax burden until Wisconsin," said Nehring. Tax Freedom Day, the day when Americans have worked enough to pay their total tax burden, came on April 24th in 2013, the 6th latest in the country.
At 13.3%, California has the highest personal income tax rate in America. The state's 7.5% base sales tax rate is also the nation's highest.
California's high unemployment rate, the fourth highest in America, can be traced to the poor business climate, ranked dead last by America's CEO's. California's Business Tax Climate ranks 48th in the nation, according to the Tax Foundation. Neighboring states offer a far more competitive climate to lure away California businesses. In Business Tax Climate, Nevada ranks 3rd, Oregon 12th, and Arizona 22nd nationally.
Democrats pushed through Proposition 30 in 2012, raising the tax burden further while offering no reform of the state's complex and difficult tax system. The measure raised sales and income taxes for four years and seven years, respectively.
"The ruling party in Sacramento doesn't see high taxes as a problem. Instead, they're constantly dreaming up new ways to make it even worse by eroding Proposition 13's protections against higher property taxes," said Nehring. "We need new leadership in Sacramento that recognizes you can't relieve the nation's highest poverty rate with some of the nation's highest taxes and the worst climate for jobs."
